Poverty of Older Women Householders in the Welfare States

Abstract

|
This article examined the effect of social security policies on the povety of older women householders in welfare states. Using the data of LIS(Luxembourg Income Study), the poverty rates of older women in 15 affluent democratic countries were compared, and the causal combinations which impact the relative poverty risk of older women householders were analyzed with Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The findings are as follows. First, high relative poverty risk of older women householders in every countries confirmed the existence of feminization of poverty. Second, the gender dimension of public pension or individual right explained the economic security of older women householder. Third, the relative cash expenditure for the old did not play the significant role of reducing older women’s poverty risk, while the relative size of social assistance expenditure, combined with other causal variables, consistently affect positively on
